Today a group of Colombians, Colombian-Americans and allies will launch ColombiaVisit.org to market exploitation opportunities and luxuriously abusive vacation packages to US taxpayers, who provide the South American nation with over $500 million annually in US aid. The campaign kicks off to counter a deceptive PR push by the administration of Colombian president Álvaro Uribe Vélez, “Colombia is Passion: Discover Colombia Through Its Heart,” launching this week in Washington, DC. Their PR offensive purports to be about tourism, but is in fact designed to push Congress to drop its opposition to the US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement.
This website is to acquaint English-speaking visitors to our beautiful and complicated country, Colombia. It is particularly geared towards US taxpayers, who provide our government with over $500 million annually in military and economic aid. Thank you! This one’s on us. We also want to welcome those businesses looking to make a killing, particularly in resource extraction. Although Colombia is generally safe for travelers from other countries, you’ll find that is less true for Colombian human rights defenders, particularly union, Afro-Colombian, indigenous and campesino activists defending their land. Plenty of ways to profit off of other people’s resources!
