Founded in 1979 as a successor to the Russell Tribunals on Vietnam (1966-1967) and on the dictatorships in Latin America (1974-1976), the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal is charged with giving visibility and clarification in legal terms to all those situations in which the massive violation of fundamental rights is not institutionally recognized, be they at the national or international level. Spanning its more than 25-year history and 33 sessions, the Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal has accompanied, anticipated, and supported peoples’ struggles against the spectre of violations to their fundamental rights, including being denied self-determination, foreign invasions, environmental destruction, and new kinds of economic dictatorships and slavery.

To date, hearings have been undertaken on the food and beverage sector (Bogotá, April 1 and 2, 2006), mining (Medellín, November 10 and 11, 2006), and biodiversity (Humanitarian Zone of Nueva Esperanza en Dios in the Cacarica River Basin, Lower Atrato, department of Chocó, February 24 to 27, 2007), and oil (Bogotá, Colombia, August 3 and 4, 2007).
