Promotion and defense of human rights in the Rural workers reserve zone in the Cimitarra Valley

Prensa Rural

The ACVC is a grassroots rural workers/farmers Organisation (Asociación Campesina del Valle del Río Cimitarra) that works in the protection of land rights issues, the enforcement of Human Rights and local and regional development through the strengthening of the community’s social fabric in three main areas in the Cimitarra River Valley area of the Magdalena Medio region of Colombia.

This region is an area affected by the internal conflict with presence of guerrilla, paramilitary and State armed forces. In this context there are frequent and systematic human rights violations against the rural population.

The habitants of the Cimitarra River Valley have been violently displaced from their traditional land and the ACVC is looking to establish state guarantees (political and judicial) in the Reserved Peasants Zone (Zona Reserva Campesina) in the Cimitarra River Valley.

The Cimitarra River Valley is a ‘forgotten land’, economically and socially speaking, where the only presence of the Colombian state is the military. The ACVC promotes the local development of the communities through building awareness of human rights and undertaking judicial advocacy and discussions with the State to ensure these rights.
