Colombian President Alvaro Uribe expressed support for the director of the National Police, general Jorge Daniel Castro, whom senator Luis Elmer Arenas is accusing of drug-trafficking.
Uribe said from Montevideo, where he attended the 16th Ibero-American Summit, that the general, who is said to be linked with a 400-kg consignment of cocaine taken to Mexico in late 2005, is an “honest, clear man.”
The president added the Attorney´s Office already gave an opinion on the works of the police director in regards to the case mentioned by Arenas, a former sergeant of the repressive body.
Marilu Mendez, national director of the investigating body of the Attorney´s Office, said there were no irregularities when the cocaine was seized in Mexico.
However, senator Luis Elmer Arenas assures he can prove the police director and other top officers were partakers, adding he will present the evidence at the Supreme Court of Justice and the Attorney´s Office this week.
