CAHUCOPANA
Corporation Humanitarian Action for Coexistence and Peace in the Nordeste Antioqueño.
2007 begins with aggressions against the campesino population. The prosperity and happiness of the new year were replaced by bullets and oppression at the hands of members of the Battalion Plan Especial Energético y Vial Number 8 of the Colombian Army, who, on January 6, murdered Heriberto Correa, a campesino from the settlement of Santa Marta in the municipality of Remedios. He was taken from the farm known as “El Coquito” to the village of the settlement, where he was killed.
Due to constant threats made by the military, the people of the region are in a state of anxiety and facing imminent forced displacement.
The Corporation Humanitarian Action for Coexistence and Peace in the Nordeste Antioqueño (CAHUCOPANA) demands:
*That the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor immediately and efficiently investigate the incidents denounced above.
*That the National government adopt the necessary measures to obligate members of the Batallion Plan Especial Enérgetico y Vial Number 8 abstain from violating Human Rights and International Humanitarian Rights.
To that end, we ask national and international communities to be alert to any possible violations that could occur in the Nordeste Antioqueño, and to pressure the Colombian government to guarantee that the campesino community can remain in the territory and in dignified conditions, as should be assured by the State.
