Campesino Association of the Cimitarra River Valley – ACVC
In the settlement of Ojos Claros (municipality of Remedios) in the Antioquian Northeast, at 11am on Sunday, March 25th, 2007, soldiers of the Calibio Battalion (14th Brigade), headed by Lieutenant Castellanos and Sergeant Palomino, illegally detained two youth, one of whom escaped, and the other, CARLOS MARIO GARCÍA, 21 years old, with ID card number 11,058,351 was unable to. Both youth were bringing wood down the Tamar River. Various community members witnessed these events, and state that CARLOS was detained alive.
CARLOS MARIO GARCÍA was affiliated with the Communal Action Council of the village, and was a member of the Campesino Association’s Cultural Group. The soldiers assassinated him at 3pm on Monday, March 26th, and presented him as a guerrilla member killed in combat, according to community members of Ojos Claros.
With the murder of CARLOS, this makes 12 assassinations in nine months, all recognized community members belonging to the region’s social organizations. This is another case of systematic extrajudicial execution of community members with clear responsibility lying with the army, specifically the Joint Task Force for the San Lucas Mountain Range of the Sur de Bolívar (5th and 14th Brigades), headed by Coronel CASTELLANOS.
• We demand that the Colombian State capture, try and punish the people responsible for this murder.
• We hold the State responsible for all of the human rights and international humanitarian law violations that are being committed in the Antioquian Northeast.
• We ask for solidarity from the Colombian people and all social organizations, human rights groups, trade unions, and student and grassroots organizations. So
