Army abuse against the Campesinos of Tame (Arauca) Continues

24.06.08

Humanidad Vigente and the Campesino Association of Arauca (ACA) have announced that on Wednesday the 18th June of this year, troops from the national army implemented a checkpoint in the village of Laurales in the municipality of Tame. They detained four farmers who were travelling by horse whilst transporting livestock. The army requested that they dismount and they undertook a search. At this same moment, an explosive in the ground exploded which killed one of the farmers and one of the soldiers. Another member of the village was also seriously injured by the blast and numerous other persons were wounded.

With great concern, Humanidad Vigente and ACA have called out to the national community to speak out against these grave acts that take place across so many rural areas within Arauca, a cause of the deepening military offensive in Arauca, that gravely affects the civil population as has been reported in previous communications.

This situation sends out new signals for an urgent presence of a verification comision in this department alongside other organisations such as the Red Cross and other non-governmental organisations such as the local ombudsman, the attorney general and the local registrar.
